Chiseling the Heart
Nirvona Soraya-Galo
I am a poet, my words deeply rooted in my lived experiences and the softening of hearts—a journey guided by my relationship with Islam. Through poetry, I seek to offer unexpected perspectives, revealing how concepts like discipline and accountability—often dismissed as rigid or old-fashioned in a capitalist world—are, in fact, the very keys to freedom.
My creative process begins as an unfiltered flow of consciousness, which I then refine over time—chiseling away until the essence of what my heart is trying to tell me emerges. I resonate deeply with Michelangelo’s response when asked about his sculpting process: "It is simple, I just chip away at anything that is not David." I approach writing in the same way. My goal is to cultivate such a deep connection with the essence of who I am and why I am here that my only task becomes removing what is misaligned—never adding excess, never seeking external validation.
I am most inspired by love in all its forms—the heart, with all its wonders, is my greatest muse. I also find deep resonance in nature, where patterns unfold effortlessly, teaching me lessons in rhythm, balance, and surrender. Through my poetry, I hope to awaken hearts, bring people together, and inspire contemplation—leaving space for both connection and transformation.
